The US State Department estimates that there are as many as 20,000 children living and working on the streets of Thailand's major cities (US Human Rights Report for Thailand 2006).
The majority of these are foreign children who have migrated to Thailand with their families or been trafficked and forced to work as beggars or street vendors.
As the gulf in income levels widens between Thailand and its neighbours, the problem of street children is set to get worse.
